Running Faster
Speed Training
Speed training sessions are almost infinite in variety, but they all involve periods of effort where your heart rate is elevated from 65-75% to 85-95% and even 100% MHR when you are very fit. By the time you are ready for speed training you are ready to join a running club or have your own coach (or both). Either way, you need guidance to safely realise your potential.
Fast and Slow Twitch Fibres
All muscles are composed of fibres of which there are slow twitch (linked with prolonged exercise) and fast twitch (that are predominantly utilised during explosive exercise).
Generally, we are genetically blessed with our proportion of fast and slow twitch fibres and this cannot be altered but we can train to utilise them efficiently.
When you are running longer steady distances, you are using nearly all slow twitch fibres but if you are to run faster you need to train your fast twitch fibres.
How do I join a club or find a coach?
There are hundreds of clubs in the UK. Ask around first. Nearly every town has a club with a web site and will welcome new members.
You do not have to be an elite runner and most clubs have a group of beginners who are looked after by more experienced athletes. All clubs will have or know of running coaches but you can also find out more about coaching by looking through this website.
