Race Review – Arkendale 10K, Sunday 30th March

Arkendale 10KIt was a windy day at Sunnyside farm, affecting some PB attempts. However, as my first competitive race since returning to Britain, it was great to get back into the swing of things. The atmosphere at the start was great with cakes, cuppas and a barbeque for spectators.

The course itself was gentle and mixed terrain. I heard some people complaining about the small inclines but I was quite happy with them as I have been training in the Dales – this gave me an advantage that was sorely needed as I was only aiming for a 1 hour 10K. As it happened, I came in at 1:07 after a much faster final mile. The ladies at the back were warm and welcoming and locals provided much needed encouragement.

Way out in front was my partner, Rob, who ran a much better 50:39. Many people, including Rob, found the final field quite a challenge as it opened out into the wind and had soft, boggy ground that sapped the energy of the uninitiated.

Arkendale 10k Sunnyside FarmThe finishing tunnel turned out to be a spectacle for onlookers as previously spent participants tried to make up their final places. I had a sprint-off with another lady but could not clip her at the last. I finished 298/321and Rob, 120/321. My goal for the next race is to improve my time to under an hour and perhaps pick up a few more places in the final mile. Rob is hoping for a 40 minute 10K.

Goody bags included a mug, some tea and a few gift vouchers – which were very welcome. Thanks to the organisers and we look forward to racing again next year!
